Jerry R. Larkey, 93, of Wolcottville, IN, died at Parkview LaGrange Hospital on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
Mr. Larkey was born on May 9, 1931, in Muncie, IN to Walter J. and Lena E. (Holtsclaw) Larkey.
Jerry was a graduate of Burris High School where he was a state qualifier in track. After graduation he went on to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War and earning both the Korean War Presidential Medal and Service Medal with 2 stars. He also served as a recruiter for the Marine Corps.
After his time in the Marine Corps, Jerry and his family settled in Gaston, IN, where he enlisted in the Indiana Army Reserves. He worked as a trade carpenter helping to build many of the buildings at Ball State University and the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. In the summer of 1974, he moved his family to Twentynine Palms, CA and worked Civil Service on the Marine Corps base as a locksmith.
After retirement, Jerry moved to LaGrange, IN, and continued his carpentry work; most recently making and selling wooden baskets. He became an active member of the LaGrange American Legion Post #215, had many special Amish friends, and could be found riding his motorcycle, which he just stopped riding in September of this year.
On September 1, 1953, in Muncie, IN he married Betty Eileen Traister; Mrs. Larkey preceded him in death on February 6, 1981.
Surviving are two daughters, Pamela (Kurt) Humes of Wolcottville, IN, Jill Oglesbee of Gaston, IN; a son, Steve Larkey of LaGrange, IN; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Michael T. DeBord of Saline, MI.
Preceding him in death along with his wife, was his father, Walter J. Larkey; his mother, Lena Elizabeth Moss; a daughter, Debra Sue DeBord; a great-grandson, Anthony Micheal DeBord; two sisters, Dorothy J. Tobin and Thelma Ann Peckinpaugh; and a daughter-in-law, Kami Dian (Richert) Larkey.
Visitation will take place on Monday, November 4, 2024, from 2-4 pm at Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Michigan St., LaGrange, IN. Funeral services will take place at 4 pm and will be concluded by a military service by the United States Marine Corps and the LaGrange American Legion Post #215.
Burial will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at 2:00 pm at the Gardens of Memory in Muncie, IN.
Memorials may be made to Toys for Tots.
