Jerry Penelton Smith, a beloved member of the community and a devoted family man, passed away on January 6, 2024. He was born on May 1, 1939, to John and Myrtie Bullock Smith.

Jerry dedicated his career at A&M to serving others. For 39 years, he worked tirelessly in building blinds for all campus buildings and dormitories. His commitment and attention to detail were greatly appreciated by everyone who benefited from his work. Jerry retired from A&M with an accomplished career that left a lasting impact on the university community.

Jerry will be remembered as a kind-hearted and selfless individual. He lived by the principles of love and compassion, always looking for ways to show the love of Christ in his daily life. Jerry had an unwavering faith and was an active member of the Life Group Families of Faith class at Central Church.

Jerry possessed a warm and friendly personality that endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He had an exceptional ability to make anyone feel welcome, as he never considered anyone a stranger. Jerry's genuine kindness touched the lives of countless individuals.

Sports held a special place in Jerry's heart. He had a deep passion for football and could often be found cheering on his favorite team. Watching the game was one of his favorite pastimes, bringing him excitement and camaraderie. Jerry also had an active social life, regularly participating in the Life Group activities.

Above all else, Jerry cherished his time spent with family. He was deeply devoted to his wife Shirley, with whom he spent all his time. Together, they built a loving home filled with laughter and joy.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and a brother John Smith, and nephew Don Smith. He leaves behind a family who will cherish his memory: his wife Shirley Ann Sebesta Proske Smith; sons Alton Burkhalter (Rose) and Michael Keith Burkhalter (Laura); grandchildren Tiffany Grimes (Corey), Lauren Burkhalter, Ashley Zimmer (Mason), and Kristin Dinger;  great-grandchildren Jacob Lee Burkhalter, Emily Grimes, Bryson Greer, Ben Garcia, Olivia Zimmer, and Owen Zimmer; brother Ray Smith (Becky); sister-in-law Frances Smith; nieces Rhonda and Deborah; brother in law Edmund (Lenora) Sebesta and sister in law Margie Bailey.

We celebrate the beautiful life Jerry lived and find solace knowing that his legacy will continue to shine brightly through those who were fortunate enough to have been touched by his presence. May he rest in eternal peace.
