Sgt. Jerry Hardeman Walker, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025, in Washington, Georgia. Born on April 14, 1941, in Atlanta, Georgia, he lived a life marked by dedication to his country, his community, and his family.
Jerry grew up in Appling County and graduated from Bass High School in Baxley in 1959 and immediately answered the call of duty by joining the Navy. He served with honor during the Korean Conflict, spending part of his service aboard the USS Maunakea, an ammunition ship. After four years of naval service, he returned to Georgia, where he began a distinguished career with the Georgia State Patrol. Starting as a license examiner in March of 1964, Jerry's commitment and integrity led to his promotion to Sergeant in 1982, and he was assigned to the Washington Post #17. He served the people of Georgia with pride until his retirement on April 27, 1995.
Following his retirement, Jerry's entrepreneurial spirit led him to purchase Dave's TV Sales and Service with his friends Ernest Kendrick and Dennis King. He also worked in construction with his patrolman colleagues, always ensuring that he provided for his family. His dedication to service continued in his personal life as a devout Christian and an active member of Clark's Station Baptist Church, where he served as the groundskeeper and handyman.
Jerry was a fan of Georgia Bulldog Football and enjoyed watching baseball. He was known for his loving and kind nature, always putting the needs of his family above his own. He was a man who built his life on the foundations of love, hard work, and sacrifice.
He is survived by his son, John Walker (Ashley) of Washington; his daughter, Jennifer Jackson (Casey) of Tignall; his brother, Paul Walker of Dublin; his grandchildren, Aubrye Witcher (Odell), Braden David (Michael), Kavin Walker, Madeline Jackson, Ella Jackson, Jaxson Edwards, and Wilkes Edwards; and his great-grandchildren, Jud Witcher, Elena Witcher, Mason Davis, and Elliott Davis. In 2018, Jerry lost his beloved wife, Elizabeth Louise Ledbetter Walker, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories after their marriage on November 12, 1967.
Sgt. Jerry Hardeman Walker's life was a testament to his unwavering spirit and the love he had for his family and country. His legacy will continue to live on through the lives of those he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will forever be a beacon of the values he held dear.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 11 am at Clark's Station Baptist Church with Kenny Long and Rev. Brian George officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Georgia State Patrol Honor Guard according rites. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 am Saturday morning in the church sanctuary.
