Jerry "Pork Chop" Webb, age 76 a longtime Fort Sumner valley farmer passed away Thursday, October 9, 2025 at Heart Hospital of New Mexico in Albuquerque following an illness. He was born May 29, 1949 in Roswell, NM to the home of Carl E and Naomi "Oma" (Beverage) Webb. He grew up in Vaughn, and attended elementary school there. He attended Fort Sumner High School and graduated with the class of 1968.
He married the love of his life, Leticia Samora in Fort Sumner in March of 1971. Together they traveled the country to various job sites where Pork Chop was the heavy equipment operator. Pork Chop operated the big bull dozers for pipeline projects and high way construction for many years. He irrigated for many farmer's in the valley to pay for his schooling. Pork Chop is most famous for his produce farming. Every year the community looked forward to the cantaloupes, watermelon, green chile, and pumpkins he would grow. He traveled to neighboring communities to sell his produce.
Pork Chop enjoyed trying all types of foods and giving very honest reviews of how he thought it tasted. He loved to tell stories of his travels. He loved to drive around the Fort Sumner valley and stop to chat with all of his farming friends. You would often catch him at the Allsup's parking lot chatting with the community members. He loved to restore old tractors, and to collect tractors as well. Pork Chop was always ready to hand out candy to his great grandson John, and any other kids he saw that day. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and great grandson. He was the best Papa to Kurstin and Javin attending all of their sporting events, helping with their show animals, attending the fairs and teaching them all of the ins and outs of the melon farming.
Pork Chop was a member of the Church on the Hill, where he was in regular attendance.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Leticia Webb, a brother Terry Webb, and a sister Carlene Webb.
Pork Chop is survived by a son Jerry Paul Webb, grand children Kurstin Webb and Jerry Javin Webb, and their mother Kerri Webb. Most importantly, according to Pork Chop, he is survived by great grandson John Oliver Chavez. Also surviving are daughter Mae Cortese, and her granddaughter Kaycee Cortese, a son Donnie Romero, Leticia's children: Anna Mae Cordova, Mary Romero, Donna Romero, and Theresa Scott. He is survived by one brother Tom Webb, and two sisters Debbie Solis, and Sandra Webb, along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Viewing will be from 1 pm to 6 pm on Monday, October 13, 2025 at the Chavez Funeral Home.
