Jerry Westberry Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 7, 2025.
Jerry David Westberry stepped into eternity on October 5, 2025 in Oklahoma City, OK. His family will miss him dearly but takes comfort in the fact that he was a follower of Jesus and is now in the presence of His Savior.
He was born on December 9th, 1946. His early years were spent all over West Texas as his father worked in the oil field. They eventually settled in Odessa, Texas where Jerry graduated from high school and worked at his Dad's mechanic shop.
After graduating High School, Jerry began attending Vine Avenue Baptist Church in Odessa, TX, where he heard the good news of Jesus' salvation and placed his faith in Jesus. It was at this church where he felt called to ministry. This calling led to his attending and graduating from Wayland Baptist University.
After college graduation he attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. It was there he met Nyla Sue Slocum of Duncan, Oklahoma who survives him. They were married for 48 years. During the course of their marriage their service included serving together as house parents at Madill's Baptist Children's home and Jerry pastoring Wirt Baptist Church and Milo Baptist Church.
He went back to school, earning a master's in counseling and getting his teaching certificate. His certification area was Social Studies and he started out teaching geography and history at Roosevelt Middle School in Oklahoma City, but he found his calling teaching In School Suspension. Jerry had a knack for loving individuals who others may have overlooked. Until he passed, he was still in contact with many of his former students.
Jerry loved fixing things and was the master using what he had. One of his biggest life projects was the Westberry Family Tree. He kept some in binders, and some he put together with bread ties. Duct tape was a very common item for his repairs. He built computers, cars, and anything mechanical he could get his hands on. There was always a project he was working on. He enjoyed building or repairing computers to give away to the kids at his school or in the neighborhood.
Friends of his on Facebook, knew one of his other favorite things was coffee. He made daily posts saying if he had his coffee, was making his coffee, or if it was one of those terrible days, that he had to skip his daily coffee.
He also loved singing. He sang in the senior adult choir until his health prevented him from getting out. Even when homebound, he would belt out old Gospel songs.
He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge. The lodge members were dear friends to him.
He is also survived by his daughter, Jill, her husband, James, and their three daughters, Catherine, Elizabeth, and Abigail and his daughter Jana and her sons Jeremiah and Zachariah and her daughter Rachel. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.
He was affectionately known as "Uncle Bud" to a host of nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Wyvelle Simmons Westebrry, and his father, Henry Jefferson Westberry, his brother Henry Lavelle Westberry, his older sister, Joy Miller, his younger sister, Wanda Gilmore, and one granddaughter, Noemi Castillo.
A memorial service will be held at Southern Hills Baptist Church Chapel at 2:00 pm on Thursday, October 9th.
In lieu of flowers, to honor his love for his students at Roosevelt Middle School, his family requests a donation to be made to Redemption Church's School's Ministry Team who have an active presence at Roosevelt. https://www.aplos.com/aws/give/RedemptionChurch1/SchoolMinistries
