Dr. Jerry Winer

Gerald Winer, age 83, died on November 17, 2024 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Susan, with whom he went steady when he was 16 and she 14, his daughter, Dr. Kimberly Diamond (Brian Sullivan) and her children, Abigail, Ethan and Zachery, his daughter, Jennifer Goodstein and her former husband, Dr. Ronnie Goodstein, their two children, Madison and Justin, his sister Betsy Kagen (Harvey Kagen), his brother Dr. Marc (Sara) Winer, his brother-in law Dr. Kenneth (Adrian) Kronberg and sister-in-law Debra Diane, many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida and Harry Winer.
Jerry was a professor in The Ohio State University Psychology Department for 35 years where, besides teaching and directing graduate students, he taught thousands of undergraduate students in his popular child and adolescent psychology courses. He was also a creative researcher who explored the oddities of people, and he served on the editorial boards of different journals. At OSU, Jerry was also active in university governance and a strong advocate of faculty rights, serving as the president of the OSU chapter of the American Association of University Professors for three terms. He frequently expressed his opinion when he perceived what he considered injustices, either in the university or elsewhere. Jerry received his BS degree from Trinity College and his PhD from Clark University. Prior to coming to OSU he taught at Ithaca College for four years. Jerry was also active in Congregation Tifereth Israel serving on its Board of Trustees and as president of its Men's Club.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at Epstein Memorial Chapel, 3232 E. Main St. Interment will follow at New Tifereth Israel Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at Susan and Jerry's home Tuesday - Thursday from 5-8pm, Friday 2-4pm and Sunday 1-4pm.
