Maj. Jesse L. Helms, Jr., USA, Retired Greenville, SC Major Jesse Lee Helms, Jr., USA, Retired, passed away Monday morning, September 9, 2013. He is now home with His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late mayor of Greenville, Jesse Lee Helms and Louise Hunnicutt Helms. He received a BA from the University of South Carolina in business administration. Following his graduation he joined the U.S. Army and retired after 25 years of distinguished service as a Major. During his career, he proudly served as a Recon platoon leader in Viet Nam and later worked with the Ranger Department at Fort Benning, GA. He worked in the family business, Southern Foods, until it was sold to PYA Monarch. He continued his career as an investment broker with Smith Barney and as an agent with New York Life. Mr. Helms was a charter member of Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church and presently attended Independent Bible Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Shirley Helms of the home; sons, David Helms of Greenville, and Jonathan Helms of Moore, OK; and his sister, Ann Eastland of Greenville. He was predeceased by his sister, Doris Blair. Mr. Helms is at The Mackey Mortuary where the family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00 until 2:15pm with services to follow at 2:30pm with Pastors Roger Dickinson, Tony Earl and family friend Jim Pitts officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Wisdom in Living Life Ministries, 12408-A Old White Horse Road, Travelers Rest, SC, 29690. Special thanks to the staff at the Cancer Center of the Carolinas for their genuine care and concern shown him during his illness.
