Jesse Marion Jenkins, 83, of Athens, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on September 7, 2025, following a long illness.

Born June 11, 1942, in Mulberry, Florida, to Leartis and Ettie Lee Jenkins, Jesse lived a life defined by kindness, dedication, and love for his family and community. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly served his country. During his years at UGA, he met the love of his life, Jean, with whom he shared 57 wonderful years of marriage.

Jesse’s career in journalism left a lasting mark in Athens, where he was best known as the former editor of the Athens Daily News and the Banner-Herald. A true storyteller, his words connected people, strengthened the community, and reflected his lifelong passion for truth and communication.

Family was the heart of Jesse’s world. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jean; daughter Cassandra Hewitt (Christopher); grandchildren James (26), Caden (19), and Elijah (14), all of Acworth, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Jill Jenkins, in 2012. Following Jill’s passing, Jesse took great comfort in knowing Cassandra lovingly raised James and Elijah, keeping the family’s bond strong.

Jesse was a man who loved life, never met a stranger, and cherished UGA football. His warmth, humor, and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. To know Jesse was to love him, and his memory will live on in the countless lives he touched.

A Viewing will be held Sunday September 14, 2025 at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home located at 4355 Lexington Rd Athens, GA 30605 at 12pm with a service to follow at 1pm. Interment will immediately follow the service at Athens Memory Gardens.
