Jesse L. Moore was a visionary leader, respected advocate, and trailblazer whose life's work profoundly shaped economic development, supplier diversity, and community advancement across the State of Indiana. Known for his integrity, strategic insight, and unwavering commitment to equity, Jesse's influence spanned higher education, government, business advocacy, and nonprofit leadership.
Jesse made history as the first Director of Supplier Diversity at Purdue University. Under his leadership, spending with diverse suppliers increased by more than 300 percent, positioning the university as a national leader in inclusive procurement.
His work expanded opportunities for minority- and women-owned businesses, strengthened Indiana's economic landscape, and made history as the first Director of Supplier Diversity at Purdue University.
Throughout his distinguished career, Jesse held senior leadership roles, including Business Advocacy Manager for the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, Executive Director of the Indianapolis Black Chamber of Commerce, and Director of Economic Development and Small Business for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. He also served in leadership roles within municipal and community-based organizations. A seasoned public servant and registered lobbyist, Jesse was a trusted strategist known for managing large teams, overseeing multimillion-dollar budgets, and leading complex statewide initiatives with clarity and purpose.
A proud graduate of Martin University, Jesse earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, cum laude. Jesse received the university's Alumni Award for outstanding community contributions and exemplary professional achievements. He later gave back to his alma mater as chairman of the Alumni Association and a member of the Board of Trustees. His service and leadership were recognized through numerous honors, including the Governor's Award for Civic Leadership and Community Service, the Purdue University Distinctive Service Award, and the establishment of the Jesse L. Moore Supplier Diversity Annual Award by Insight Into Diversity magazine. In 2016, he received the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash Award, presented by former Indiana Governor Michael Pence.
Jesse also served as a board member of Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, a board member of the Indianapolis, Indiana Black Expo Chapter, and a former President of the Greater
Lafayette, Indiana Black Expo Chapter. Outside of his professional and civic commitments, Jesse enjoyed golf outings, often spending time on the course with friends and family.
Before his civilian and civic leadership, Jesse honorably served his country as a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. He completed two tours of duty during the Vietnam War, demonstrating courage, discipline, and a deep sense of duty at a pivotal moment in our nation's history. His military service laid the foundation for a lifetime of leadership, public service, and steadfast commitment to others, values he carried into every role he held thereafter.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jesse was deeply committed to community service, mentorship, workforce development, and expanding opportunities for historically marginalized communities. His legacy is defined not only by what he achieved but by the doors he opened, the systems he strengthened, and the lives he uplifted. His impact will be felt across Indiana for generations to come.
Above all, Jesse was a devoted family man. As the family patriarch and leader, he cherished time spent with loved ones; whether vacationing in Florida, cruising the Caribbean, playing golf with his brothers, or simply gathering in one another's homes. He also took special joy in his grandchildren, Adria, Daylan, and Corrina, whom he adored deeply.
Jesse L. Moore was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Moore; his father, Jessie Moore, Sr.; his mother, Dorothy Walker Moore; and his brother, Jerry Moore. He is survived by his beloved grandchildren, Adria, Daylan, and Corrina Van Ostrand; his siblings, Rick (Stephanie), Jacqueline (the late Willie G. McMillan, Jr.), Kofi, Tony(Vanessa), Neecie, Nate (Clarice), Eula, and Melanie; First Cousins Rodney Norton and Norma Jean Norton; Sister in- Law Jennifer Ayers- Moore (Jerry); a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and innumerable friends; and his special companion, Ms. Eva O'Brien.
