Family will receive friends Thursday February 19, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at First AME Zion, 873 Bryden Rd. Columbus, OH 43205. Interment: Forestlawn Memory Gardens.
Jesse Leonard Scott, age 77, was born February 14, 1948, in Columbus, Ohio and entered eternal rest on February 9, 2026.
Born to the union of Percy Charles Scott, Sr. and Florence Adeline Scott, the fifth of six children, Jesse grew up in the King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhood spending many carefree years on the courts of Garfield Elementary, Champion Jr. High, and East High Schools with his beloved brothers, known in the neighborhood as the Scott brothers.
Jesse, a proud East High Tiger, played on the baseball team and completed his education in 1966. Jesse enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1968, served with honors in the Vietnam war, receiving the following medals, National Defense Medal; Vietnamese Service Medal w 3 stars; Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry medal w/palm; Vietnamese Campaign Medal w/device. Honorably discharged in 1973 with the rank of LCpl E-3.
After his military service he was employed by DCSC, receiving several awards during his career including recognition for a training manual written by him that was then used to train new inspection clerks throughout the Receiving Division's Inspection Branch. He retired from DCSC in 1993.
Jesse received his spiritual foundation at Hebrew Baptist Church assisting his mother with the printing of the weekly bulletin on the mimeograph machine. His love for music, learned at his mother's side, a choir director/ pianist and organist for many churches in the Columbus faith community. Jesse's attempts at learning the piano were overshadowed by his love for baseball, multitasking was not a term used in those days as he excelled in the game of baseball.
Jesse's spiritual and musical journey continued when he joined the First A.M.E. Zion Church singing with the Templairs (all men choir,) Inspirational and Sanctuary Choir, and the Andrew L. Foster, Jr. Memorial Choir. In addition to serving in the music ministry, he was a member of the Trustee Board and Church Sexton. His exemplary carpentry, woodworking and drafting skills were on display as he loved using his gifts to serve the Lord and His church.
Jesse is preceded in death by his parents, brother Kenneth Douglas, sisters Frances Louise and Mary Ellen.
Jesse leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 40 years Cynthia Tanner Scott, Loving Children: Dwight, Rayla, Renee (Aloysius), Marcus (Chanie), Michael (Charee);
Grandchildren: Alex, Spencer, Dionthony, Ashley, Assante, Nahshon, Rehani, Aurelius, Nehemiah, Michael, Julius, Nevaeh, Solomon, and Josiah.
Brothers: Percy C. Scott, Jr, and Raymond C. (Nichelle), niece Shirley Scott;
Best friend Kenneth Duncan, special cousin Stephanie Tanner, and a host of nieces nephews and many cherished friends and family.
