Jessica Cox Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Jessica Eileen Cox, 49, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025, at St. Luke's Plaza Hospital, with her loving wife at her side.

Born April 18, 1976, in Belleville, Illinois, Jessica was the beloved daughter of Sharon G. (Blaylock) Cox and the late Roland A. Cox. She was preceded in death by her brother, Cody Cox (2017).

Jessica graduated from Collinsville High School, Class of 1994, and shortly after enlisted in the United States Army National Guard at the age of 17. She proudly served her country as a Finance Specialist, rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class. While serving her country, Jessica earned a master's degree in organizational leadership from Friends University. She retired from the Army National Guard in 2017 after a distinguished career and continued to serve in the same capacity as a civilian.

Jessica's greatest joy was her family. After a whirlwind romance, she married the love of her life, Natalie Chisam. Together they shared a beautiful life built on laughter, adventure, and unwavering devotion. Jessica was a proud and loving mother to her sons, Mateo Tamir Thompson and Myles Christopher Thompson, and embraced Natalie's children-Brooklyn Rose Chisam, Aspen Violet Chisam, and Harper Dean Chisam-as her own. She was also deeply cherished by her in-laws, Nathan Gunn, Diamond "Twin" Coleman (Brett), Wanda Gunn, Jamie Gunn (Mari), and her sister by heart, Jaime Matthews (Jason).

Jessica was passionate about sports and known for her boundless energy as both a participant and a fan. She excelled in basketball and softball throughout her life and later enjoyed tennis and kayaking with her wife. She was an avid supporter of the Kansas City Chiefs and women's basketball, often staying up late to watch international matches. Her greatest pride came from cheering on Myles in his athletic pursuits and Harper on the golf course.

Outside of sports, Jessica's love for music was a defining part of her life. A devoted concertgoer, she especially enjoyed seeing Old Dominion perform live. Her heart beat to the rhythm of 1990s hip hop and R&B, and her knowledge of the genre made her unbeatable in music trivia.

Jessica was known for her selflessness, humor, and loyalty. She was a steadfast friend, a compassionate listener, and someone who could always bring a smile with her wit. Above all, she will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and friend whose love and presence touched countless lives.

Jessica's love, laughter, and loyalty will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew her.

A visitation and memorial service will be held for Jessica on Friday, October 3 at Heartland Cremation & Burial Society, Raytown MO from 2pm to 4m. The memorial service will begin at 3pm.
