Jessie May Wallek, 88, was born January 12, 1937, to Clyde and Mary Ellen Harris in Refugio, Texas. She attended school in Refugio through her freshman year. Her father, who worked in the oil field, was transferred to Skidmore during Jessie May's sophomore year and the family moved.
Shortly after moving to Skidmore, Jessie May met Edwin Wallek, Jr. She wrote home to her best friend, "I've met the man I'm going to marry." Marry Edwin she did, but upon her father's insistance, she waited one year after graduating high school.
On June 1st, 1956, Jessie May married Edwin, her high school sweetheart. The couple rented a farmhouse and began to build their family and life together. With their children, Sandra, Douglas, and Patrick, their home flourished. Once their grandchildren arrived, their house was full for family dinners and games around the kitchen table.
She spent 25 years as a high school secretary in Skidmore-Tynan while also working on the farm with whatever was needed at the time. Many times, during harvest she had to drive to Edna for combine parts after school. Oh, the perks of a farm wife!
Jessie May enjoyed traveling and insisted on an annual vacation before harvest. Jessie May and Edwin drove all over the United States together, as well as most roads in Bee County. When she retired, they traveled along the Alaskan Highway.
