When we moved in the 60's to a new neighborhood, the Martinez family were already there (I believe) along with other families. As time passed, our families became not only neighbors, but good friends. I recall numerous neighborhood parties we attended. Great fun. Lots of music, laughter & occasional rowdiness.
As kids, we hung out with Rudy (son) and Yolie (daughter). I particularly remember the summers as we frequently were at the Martinez house. We were able to watch cartoons (like Popeye) or shows like Davy & Goliath because they had cable tv! We would also play kid games like Mr. Peeyounee(?) or perhaps a game of "dare" (at least that's what I would call it). One such dare involved eating pickled hot peppers followed by beans. My mouth was on fire! There was always some red pistachios laying around (which I secretly coveted). There were other shenanigans which I will not divulge to protect the guilty!
As long as I've known the Martinez family, Mr. Martinez (Jesus), was always kind & calm. He always said "hello" when we saw each other. I was saddened by the news of his passing but will remember him with affection & fondness and a father that was as proud of his children as they were of him.
