His work brought opportunities to work on the Alaskan Pipeline and at the Nevada Test Site.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was an important part of family life. Jim and Dona served in many different callings. In their later years, genealogy and Temple Work were central to their lives. As a young family, Karate became an important part of life. Jim learned from Chuck Norris and gladly helped his children grow a love for martial arts. In 1981, they moved to Overton, Nevada. A love for Blue Grass festivals was developed as the kids moved out. Jim and Dona learned to play various instruments and they enjoyed traveling to play and sing at many different festivals.
