PERRY, GEORGIA- James Edward "Jim" Poss, Sr., 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025, in Perry, Georgia. Services will be held on Monday, September 8, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Haynesville. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., and the funeral will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will also be on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Andersonville National Cemetery. Jim's family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shriners Hospital, organizations that reflect his compassionate spirit. Jim was born on May 5, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Jesse Poss, Sr. and Rebecca "Reba" Cook Poss. Jim dedicated much of his life to service, both in his career and in the military. Jim proudly served in the United States Navy as a Machinist Mate First Class, a position that spoke to his meticulous skill and steadfast dedication. After his retirement from the Navy, he continued to serve his community through his work with the Macon-Bibb County Public Library System, where he was responsible for maintenance. Jim also assisted his wife in caring for children, a testament to his nurturing spirit and generosity. His commitment to fellow veterans was evident through his active involvement in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6126, Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion. These associations were not just a part of his routine; they were a significant part of his identity. Jim was a devout member of the First Baptist Church of Haynesville and regularly attended Tubby Fowler's Sunday School Class. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him in his service to others and his community. An avid fisherman, Jim found peace and joy in fishing. He also cherished cruises with his family, creating lasting memories on the open waters. These hobbies provided him with much-needed relaxation and time spent with loved ones. Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Judith Elaine "Judy" Odom Poss; his parents; his daughter, Kathy Poss; son-in-law, Rodney Cleveland; his grandson, Sam Poss; and his siblings, Doris Poss, Loriene Poss, Anna Elizabeth Poss, Benjamin Burton Poss, and infant brother, Jesse G. Poss, Jr. Left to cherish the memories they made with Jim are his children, James E. "Jim" Poss, Jr. (Carolyn) of Enterprise, AL, Christian T. "Chris" Poss of Perry, GA, and Melinda "Linda" Overly (Mark) of Bellefontaine, OH; his eight grandchildren, James Poss III, Anne Elizabeth Poss, David Poss, Jason Overly, Audry Porter, Amber McCarty, Ryan Cleveland, and Logan Poss; fourteen great-grandchildren; siblings, Tommy Poss and Margaret Eaton; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
