Jimmy Rollins Obituary

Published by Claire Brothers Funeral Home - Houston from May 25 to May 26, 2019.
Jimmy Ray Rollins of Humble, Texas passed away May 20, 2019 after a long struggle with cancer at his home at the age of 67. Jimmy was born in Houston, Texas to Dock and Norma Rollins on Feb 2, 1952 and has a brother, Jack, and a sister, Joyce. He graduated from Spring High School in 1970 in Spring, Texas and went to work for Southwestern Bell in June of that year, where he worked his entire career until retiring in 2012. He was in the US Army Signal Corp Division from July 1972, stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington and had several tours including one in Vietnam, where his passion for flying in helicopters began. He was honorably discharged as a Sargent in July 1975. Jimmy joined the Harris County Sheriff Reserves on December 18, 1985 and served diligently for 34 years, reaching the rank of Major in 2017 and receiving numerous awards for hours served, including the Harris County Sherriff's Award in 2013. His unselfish desire to serve and protect was ever present and known by many who called him a friend and a brother. He volunteered on the shooting range training new cadets and provided escort services to college and high schools as well as support to his fellow officers. Jimmy was recognized several times by the 100 Club for his service and bravery in the face of grave danger. Jimmy served as a volunteer with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo starting in 2013 via the New Caney - Splendora Metro 'Go Texan' committee for 4 years. He then moved to the Safety Committee in 2017. He also served in the Humble Rodeo as an auctioneer volunteer for many years. Jimmy is survived by his brother Jack Rollins and his wife, Lynne of Laguna Niguel, California; his sister, Joyce Rollins Williams of Knoxville, Tennessee; 8 nieces and nephews, Joshua Rollins in White Oak, Texas, Jaalla Weir in McKinney, Texas, Matthew Loevenguth in San Juan Capistrano, California, Jennifer Carlsen in Poway, California, Nick Loevenguth in Oceanside, California, Jessica Rollins in Malibu, California, Walter Williams III in Nashville, Tennessee and Ben Williams in Knoxville, Tennessee. Jimmy was a wonderful man, funny, talented and above all, a gentle soul and true gentlemen. He had a real passion for adventure evidenced by his many years racing speed boats and riding his Harley motorcycle. He clearly maintained a zest for life. His servant heart and willingness to give was never more evident than the countless hours he served as a volunteer with the Sherriff Reserves. His skills as a police officer served him well and crossed over into other areas of his life as reflected by his huge heart and caring advice, he loved helping others and it showed with his smile and his favorite tag line…… ABSOLUTELY! There will be a celebration of life service on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Victory Worship Center, 809 West Road, Houston, Texas and the interment will be at 12:45 a.m.at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77038. I met Jimmy through neighboring volunteer fire departments that we belonged to and working on the fire department radios for them, later to learn he was a fellow ham operator and grew closer together from that, helping each other with projects.
We became such close friends over the years that I asked Jimmy to be best man at my wedding.
Another friend got me to leave the fire department and get into law enforcement with him and join the Harris County Sheriff reserve with him.
I tried to get Jimmy to join also, but at the time, his parents did not want him to do it.
Between his and my work and family we did not cross paths as much, but kept in touch through Ham radio.
When Jimmy finally did join the department, one of his first ride along as a rookie was with my partner and I.
I left Harris County Sheriff and transferred to Montgomery County Constable Department to be closer to home to work as my main job was keeping me busy at the time and with kids growing up.
We kept in touch through Ham radio but Jimmy was working most of his spare time for Harris County in his area.
We lost track of each other until another friend that knew Jimmy told me that he had cancer and not very long to live.
I went to see Jimmy at his house on a Thursday evening and spent an hour or so with him but left as other people were there also and planned to come back Sunday evening to spend some time together alone to talk, but Jimmy passed on Saturday night.
I am mad at you for not telling me of your condition sooner so we could have had some time together before leaving for your heavenly home.
R.I.P. brother and keep heaven safe .....until we meet again !!!
Mike
