Jimmy Wayne Thomas, born on January 22, 1947, in Lubbock, Texas, to Con and Lorene (Foerster) Thomas, passed away peacefully in Lubbock on December 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and industrious spirit. He was 78 years old.

Jimmy was raised in Lubbock, Texas, until he was in the 8th grade when the family moved to Spur, Texas. Jimmy graduated from Spur High School in 1965, where he made his mark as a member of the football team, proudly wearing the number 73 as he played on the offensive line. His professional journey was marked by a commitment to the community and an unwavering work ethic. He was a salesman and designer for Texas distributors, specializing in heating and air conditioning units. In 1976, he proudly built the first Dairy Queen in Abernathy, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. He later worked for John Deere, selling farm equipment, before retiring from the state school after 13 years, where he served as the maintenance supervisor.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Jimmy was known for his deep love for his family, which was the cornerstone of his life. He cherished the moments spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who all gravitated to "D.J.'s" lap. His presence was a constant at his family's sporting events, parties, and activities, demonstrating an unwavering dedication to supporting their dreams, regardless of his health. His favorite expressions, including "we got this," echoed his optimistic view of life.

Jimmy was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Abernathy, where he fostered connections rooted in shared faith and community values. His hobbies reflected a vibrant spirit; he enjoyed building birdhouses with his grandsons, fixing anything with duct tape, cooking family meals, and indulging in fishing and hunting. Known as the neighborhood "Mr. Fix-It," he had a talent for refurbishing old tools and cars and was often found engaged in playful banter with old buddies. He was a dedicated fan of the Dallas Cowboys, always hopeful.... even though “they would never win it”

He is survived by his beloved wife, Karen (Morrison) Thomas, with whom he shared 59 wonderful years of marriage. He is also survived by his daughter, Jennifer Thomas; his brother, Jerry (Hoot) Thomas, his grandchildren Cleve and Holley Riley, Rhyan and Taylor Ehlers, Garrett and Taylor Royal, Garrett and Addison (Ally) Moore, Kennedy King and Dom Signoretto; his great-grandchildren Michaela Taylor, Jason and Jaiden Taylor, Jessica Riley, Tripp Ehlers, Ruston Ehlers, Teale Ehlers, and Rush Royal; his nieces and nephews Stoney and Julie Thomas, and Kaylee and Dahlia Brannan, Joey, Misty, and Graycie York, Lindsey Thomas, Sawyer Thomas, Reagan Thomas, and Presley Thomas, Jamie (Morrison) Kingsley and Jodi Morrison.

Jimmy was predeceased by his daughter, Jessica D'Ann King, who left this world on April 20, 2005. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched, forever remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Graveside services will be held Monday, January 5, 2026 at 10:00 AM with Ryan Smallwood, Senior Pastor, officiating. The family will gather to receive friends Sunday, January 4, 2026 from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Abell Funeral Home.
