Carrollton, KY- Jo Ellen Lansdale Bromwell, age 87, a proud resident of Carroll County, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on February 9, 1938, in Lexington, Kentucky, Jo Ellen was the daughter of Jacob Raymond Lansdale, Sr. and Roera Mae Goodpaster Lansdale. She was named after Joe Goodwin, the well-known owner of Patchen Wilkes Stock Farm in Lexington, where her uncle Herman Goodpaster worked as a respected horse trainer and breeder.
Jo Ellen spent most of her life in Carroll County, where she raised a family, built a career, and left a lasting impression on just about everyone she met.
She wasn't afraid to blaze a trail. Jo Ellen made history as the first paid female EMT in Carrollton, Kentucky, working alongside Steve Meadows, a true testament to her courage and determination. Fittingly, she paved the way for both her daughter, Charlena, and her granddaughter, Jacy Jo, who proudly followed in her footsteps, serving as EMTs on the very same ambulance service.
Her commitment to her community didn't stop there. Over the years, Jo Ellen served in many roles, including working at Teledyne, as an ER Clerk at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, a deputy with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Ricky Cayton, and later at the Carroll County Detention Center. Her final and perhaps most beloved job was at Kroger, where she worked and eventually retired after 17 years. From her spot at the register, she shared sass and life advice in equal measure, always keeping quarters handy so kids could snag treasures from the prize machines. To friends and customers alike, she was "Mama Jo", a nickname she wore like a badge of honor.
Jo Ellen leaves behind an incredible legacy in her family: her daughter, Charlena Bromwell Hofmann (Robert Hofmann); her sister, Lena Rivers Welch; her grandsons, Jacob Walter Page (Jessica Page) and Robert Dale Hofmann, Jr. (Rachel Hofmann): her granddaughter, Jacy Jo Rivers Hofmann; and her great grandchildren, Emma Grace, Alexandra Faith, Claire Everleigh and Jaxon Jacob.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Raymond Lansdale, Jr.
Funeral Services will be held on August 9, 2025, at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, with burial to follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Carrollton. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M., with the funeral service immediately following.
Jo Ellen's love was big and generous, whether she was spoiling her family, caring for animals, or sharing a laugh over a Cracker Barrel meal. Fierce, loyal, and a force to be reckoned with, she was truly "Mama Jo", a part of Carroll County's heart who will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in Jo Ellen's honor to Carroll County Animal Shelter- skip the petals, save a paw, just the way she would have wanted.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home.
