Joan Brown Obituary

Published by D'Anjolell Memorial Home of Broomall on Jan. 31, 2021.
Brown 1931~2021 Joan M. Brown, 89, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2021 at her home in Gap, PA, where she had been living since March of 2020. While successfully raising her children she also had many careers over the years; babysitting, taking in ironing, the Slinky Factory, Deluxe Check Printing, secretarial positions and her favorite - waitressing at many of the local restaurants. She loved the interaction with co-workers, customers and the many friends she made over the years. After retiring Joan and Fred moved to Delaware. They were very active with the Elks Lodge for many years holding various leadership positions. After 12 years they moved back to Pennsylvania to be close to their children and grandchildren. Joan will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and devotion to her family. She loved spending time with family and friends – holidays, picnics, swimming, birthdays and camping. She enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, reading, going to the casino with Fred and vacations to Cape May. Many years ago one of her hobbies was ceramics and everyone in the family has many of her works of art to remember her by. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-six years, Frederick R. Brown, Sr., her brother Neil Watson and granddaughter Ashly Elizabeth Brown. She is survived by her five children, Patricia Sexton of Downingtown, Lynne Scheibe (Richard) of West Chester, Robin Hotelling (Eric) of Gap, Frederick R. Brown, Jr. of Malvern, Stephen Brown (Debbie) of Malvern, eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life with family and friends will be held at a later date. Interment will be private. She felt very strongly that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County. Joan was a survivor of domestic violence in her childhood and first marriage.

She was truly the kindest, sweetest step-grandmother I would have the privilege of having. I miss her everyday. Love you, Mommom.

Joan had been a loving resident at the Potter House, and was an enthusiastic participant in our Bingo & card games, as well as other community activities. She will always be remembered as a wonderful, caring person that we were privileged to know while she was here with us. Sincere Condolences to all her family as they grieve her passing. God Bless you all and find comfort in knowing that she is with Him !

I had the privilege of caring for Joan during the last months of her life. She was the most lovely woman, always asking after me and if I was ok. Always appreciative of my nursing visits. We joked that we were proper English women because she was always so gracious. She loved her family so very much and it made me so happy that they all were there at the end for her. What a lovely woman.
