Joan Katherine Bumpus

Joan Katherine Bumpus, 96, of Bethlehem, PA passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 23, 1929 in Springfield, Massachusetts to the late Michael and Katherine Mitchell, the family matriarch as she lived a life rich in love, strength, and resilience.

She grew up during the Great Depression, married college-aged Paul Alan Bumpus also of Springfield, in 1951 and together they built a home filled with children, laughter, hard work, and unwavering attendance to Holy Cross parish in Springfield. Joan was a devoted homemaker and part-time employee, while raising four children with patience, wisdom, and endless encouragement. She delighted in simple joys-baking her famous Scotcheroos, cookies, and cakes; encouraging children and grandchildren to enjoy reading books. She loved reading biographies of the U.S. Presidents and spouses.

Known for her indomitable spirit, Irish wit and humor, she was the heart of her family and a source of strength to all who knew her. Even in her later years, she remained curious about the world and international travel, and quite proud of her children's, grandchildren's, great grandchildren's accomplishments, and grateful for every day. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Paul, her parents, and siblings Connie, Bobby, and Doris.

Joan K. Bumpus is survived by her four children: Diane Moeser and husband Joseph Moeser, of Bethlehem, PA; Michael Bumpus and wife Deborah Bumpus, of Clarksburg, MD; Stephen Bumpus and wife Pamela Bumpus, of Leominster, Massachusetts; and David Bumpus and wife Meriem Bumpus of Shrewsbury Massachusetts; her 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who were blessed by her presence.

A wake will be held on January 30, 2026 at 9:30-10:30 at Chapman Funeral Home, Main Street, Falmouth, Massachusetts; a Funeral Mass held at 11:00 at St Anthony's Church, East Falmouth Highway, Falmouth, Massachusetts; and burial will be held at 12:30 at the Massachusetts National Cemetery (Bourne National Cemetery, Bourne, Massachusetts).

Though we miss her dearly, we take great comfort in knowing she is now in the arms of her Savior, free from pain and reunited with those who went before her.
