Joan Theresa Chung, affectionately known as “Gloria” by her family, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2025, after a short and unexpected illness. She was 83 years old. Joan was born in Georgetown, Guyana, immigrated to the United States in 1991, and resided in Akron, Ohio.
Joan was dedicated to her husband and three children, whom she placed first and above herself. She made many sacrifices to ensure they were loved, happy, comfortable, educated, and always fed. She enjoyed cooking, music (especially hymns), dancing, and gardening. Because her knees started to affect her later in life, she had to greatly cut back on these loved activities.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Ina Wilkinson and Ulric Williams; and siblings, Jean, Olga, Stanley, Stephen, Roland, and Clyde. She is survived by her husband, Terry; three children, Sonia, Terry Jr., and June; siblings, Maureen, Norma, Ingrid, Louisa, Debra, Herman, Harold, Ulric jr., Keith, and Carol; and many nieces and nephews, along with many others who loved and respected her, and who had shared in either large or small parts of Joan's life.
Joan was deeply religious and spiritual, and never hesitated to help others in need. She will be eternally loved and terribly missed!
Joan will be entombed in a private committal service at Crown Hill Cemetery on THURSDAY November 13, 2025. To honor her, please help someone in need in whatever way you choose.
