Joan E. Gibbon

DUNKIRK - Joan E. Gibbon, 94, of Dunkirk, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, at Chautauqua Nursing & Rehab, Dunkirk.

She was born in Olean on July 19, 1931, the daughter of the late Orin and Laura Hyde Gross.

Joan was a graduate of the former Shinglehouse High School in Shinglehouse, Pa., Class of 1951.

She served in the U.S. Air Force and was a cafeteria worker at Silver Creek Central School for approximately 10 years. She was the proprietor of the former Wright's Grocery in Silver Creek and the Car Lot Bar in Spring Hill, Fla.

Joan was a member of the Samuel Cimino VFW Post 6472 Auxiliary in Silver Creek and a lifetime member of VFW Post 9236, Auxiliary in Hernando Beach, Fla.

She was an avid snowmobiler.

Survivors include her daughter, Tammy (Louis) Pagano of Fisherville, Ky.; and four sons, Dana (Donna) Gibbon of Sheridan, Kim (Michelle) Gibbon of Silver Creek, Randy Gibbon of Silver Creek and Edwin V. Gibbon III of Dunkirk. Also surviving are a sister-in-law; Frances Farwell of Rochester; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Edwin V. Gibbon Jr., whom she married on June 14, 1952, in Cuba, and who died May 15, 2020; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Gibbon, who died Aug. 20, 2025.

Private interment will be in the Florida National Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
