Joan M. Gratz was born to John and Grace (Matteson) Gratz on December 24, 1939 in Estelline, South Dakota. Graduated from Estelline, South Dakota High School, and then went on to receive a diploma in nursing from St. John School of Nursing in Huron, South Dakota, a GSN from South Dakota State College in Brookings, South Dakota, and an MNA from University of Iowa. Joan was employed as a staff nurse, nursing educator, and nursing service administrator. The majority of her nursing service was with the Department of Veterans Affairs. She has been recognized for her solid knowledge of nursing, dedication, values and fairness. Her love of family, nursing, and veterans carried over to life activities and commitments. Preceded in death by her parents, John and Grace Gratz, brother-in-law, Leon Schnieder. Survived by twin sister, June Schnieder, nephews, Brian (Heidi) Schnieder and Kevin (April) Schnieder, great nephews and great nieces, Jackson, Madelyn, Emilia, and Gabriel, cousins, many of her nursing friends, and good friends, Rita Murray and Mary Kirkpatrick. Joan Gratz, 85, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2025. A Visitation will be held at 8:30 am on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at St. Frances de Sales Catholic Church in Estelline, SD, with a 9:30 am Rosary Service. A Graveside Service will follow at 10:30 am at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery in Estelline.
