Joan A. Hemmila, 92, of Frontenac, Kansas passed away at 3:40 a.m. Sunday, September 24, 2023 at Oakview Estates in Frontenac.
Joan was born in Pittsburg, the only daughter of Fred and Irene (Blanken) Kubler. She attended school in Pittsburg as well as classes wherever she lived.
She married Charles Miller, and together they had three sons: Danny, Ronald and Timothy. She was an active volunteer in Boy Scouts, PTA, Red Cross, her church, later in the Air Force Wives, Salvation Army, Chamber of Commerce and many other charities. Charles passed away early in life in Topeka. Later she married Herbert Hemmila, who was in the Air Force. They lived in Kansas, Virginia and Texas. They enjoyed traveling to many countries. While in Panama, Joan was invited to close the gates to the Panama Canal. They were invited by Embassy friends to visit Hungary, while it was under communist control.
Joan is survived by sons, Danny and Timothy (Marianne); grandchildren, Carley Miller, Austin Miller and Bailey Miller; daughter-in-law, Ruth Miller and two brothers, Donald Kubler (Judy) and Phillip Kubler (Marilyn).
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, David, both husbands, Charles and Herbert and her son, Ronald.
A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Wehrman officiating. Private family burial will take place at a later time. In order to honor Joan's memory, donations can be made to ALS Association National Chapter (ALS.org). These may be left at or mailed to Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Online condolences may be left at www.brennermortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg.
