Joan Ottowiess (Thomas) Isaac, of Reminderville, Ohio was born June 2, 1933, in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, to Magnolia Young and John Thomas. A brother, Willie Clarence Myers, preceded her in death.
Joan grew up in Bethel African Methodist Episcopal AME Church where she was christened as an infant and accepted Christ for herself at the age of eight. She attended B.O. Feller private school during her early years before transferring to the Mound Bayou school system where she graduated at the age of sixteen.
She entered the Mississippi Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Jackson, MS where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1953. She remained in Jackson until marrying Charles H. Isaac, Sr. on December 17, 1955. They relocated to Cleveland, Ohio where Charles had settled following his four-year tour of duty with the U.S. Army.
To this union, three children were born: Sylvia (d.2020), Karyl, and Charles Jr.
Joan continued to work as an R.N. specializing in Operating Room Nursing, where she served in supervisory positions with Kaiser Permanente, Mt. Sinai Hospital, and the VA Medical Center.
The family joined Affinity Missionary Baptist Church in October 1980, where Joan and the children were baptized.
Joan was a devoted Christian worker as a missionary, Deaconess, and Deacon. She taught Children's bible study and served multiple terms as Chairperson of the Deaconess board as well as the Jim McJunkin Missionary Society. Joan also served on the Board of the Cleveland Baptist Association and the Camp Koinonia Camp and Conference Center.
Joan was a member and Past President of Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority, Nu Chi Chapter, a national service organization whose motto is "Service for Humanity."
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles (1987), brother Willie and Sister-in-law Mamie, daughter Sylvia (2002), and son in-law George (2025). She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted children Karyl, Charles Jr. (Cindy), grandchildren Bridgette Streety, Karl and Andre Joyner, Victoria, Gabrielle, and Christian Isaac, nieces Tonda (Ceaser) Wells, and Madalyn (Anderson) Johnson, and a host of family, friends, and Church family.
