JOAN LOWELL Obituary

LOWELL, Joan (MacDuffie) Passed away peacefully in her sleep, at her home in Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard, at the age of 98. Joan was the wife of Ralph Lowell, Jr.; and the daughter of John and Evelyn Walker MacDuffie of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. She had two sisters, Katharine Whitney and Patricia Swan; and a brother, John W. MacDuffie. She is survived by three children, Rafe Lowell, Vee Lynch, and Amy Lowell; and their spouses. She had six grandchildren and four great-grandchilden. Joan also leaves behind two devoted caregivers, Nancy Nevin and Nana Atuahene of Martha's Vineyard, who helped her immensely during the latter years of her life, and whom she loved dearly. Joan attended the Windsor School in Boston, and Bennet College in New York, where she majored in fashion design. She married Ralph on July 15, 1948. They raised their three children between Westwood and Nahant, before retiring to Edgartown in the late seventies. Joan was a talented artist. She loved to cook, sew, garden and go to yard sales, but her favorite activity was deep sea fishing off Edgartown Harbor. She was quite the fisherwoman. Her years on the Vineyard were the happiest time of her life. There will be a private ceremony in her memory this spring in Edgartown.
