Joan Lundy Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 30, 2025.
Joan LaVern Taylor Lundy was born on May 6, 1950, to the late Stanley Taylor and Mable Taylor-Cotman. She departed this life peacefully in the early morning hours of September 23, 2025. She was the eldest of four children: Stanley ("Sonny"), Thomas ("Tommy"), and Cephas Allen ("Jake Jr."). Joan accepted Christ at an early age and became a devoted member of Liberty Baptist Church. There, she regularly attended Sunday School and joyfully sang in the "Junior Choir." Later she became a member of The Gravel Hill Baptist Church, Richmond, Va. Joan received her early education in both the Charles City and New Jersey public school systems. She later pursued higher education at Johnson C. Smith University and proudly earned her bachelor's degree in education from Virginia Union University. Joan dedicated her career to shaping young minds as a teacher in the Charles City and Henrico Public School Systems. In 1980 Joan married Alfred Lundy, of Petersburg Virginia, their union was blessed with one son, Ryland. Joan adored her son and was deeply devoted to his well-being. Sadly, Ryland preceded her in death on July 1, 2015. Joan had a natural love for children and an exceptional ability to connect with them. Determined and strong-willed, Joan lived her life with great purpose. Once she set her sights on a goal, nothing-and no one-could stand in her way. Though her approach was sometimes questioned, her passion and persistence were undeniable. In 2011 her health began its decline, causing her to become a resident of Hanover Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hanover Va. While in their care, her brother Cephas Allen, was a constant visitor bringing her favorite treats Pepsi and Lay's Potato chips. The family will always appreciate the love and compassionate care of the Doctors and staff until her transition. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Mable and Stanley; her stepfather, Cephas Cotman; her brother, Tommy; her beloved son, Ryland Lundy; and her nephew, Stuart Taylor. She leaves to cherish her memory: her brothers, Stanley Taylor (Karen) and Cephas Allen Cotman; nieces Ashley Taylor and Kayla Taylor Patel, as well as a plethora of aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and friends. Joan lived boldly and walked her own path-unapologetically and without compromise. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 18th at 11:00 am at Liberty Baptist Church, 9100 Liberty Church Rd, Charles City, VA. Rest well and find your peace. You will be missed but never forgotten. "To God Be the Glory"
