Mozell Lee Booker
November 8, 1941 – September 30, 2025

Mozell Lee Booker, 83, of Fork Union, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, in her hometown. A lifelong educator, community leader, and trailblazer, Mozel l dedicated her life to service, always giving more than she received. Born on November 8, 1941, to Reverend Allen Shannon Hughes and Harriet Lee Hughes, Mozell grew up in Fluvanna County, where she graduated at the top of her class from Abrams High School. She went on to earn her degree in Education from Virginia Union University in 1964, launching a remarkable career that spanned continents and touched countless lives.

Mozell began her teaching journey in Washington, D.C., where she taught 1st and 2nd grade and met her husband, Air Forceman Jerome J. Booker Sr. Together, they raised two children and traveled the world, living in Germany, California, and Japan. Throughout her travels, Mozell continued to teach-working with children with profound disabilities, students in juvenile justice centers, and elementary-aged children with compassion and excellence.

After returning to Fluvanna County, Mozell earned two master's degrees-one in Education from Michigan State University and another in Administration from the University of Virginia. She became a principal and led schools in both Fluvanna and Charlottesville for over three decades, leaving a legacy of educational excellence and strong leadership.

Following her retirement from the school system in 2001, Mozell continued her public service as a truant officer and then made history as the first African American woman elected to the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors. She served in that role for 16 years, retiring in early 2024.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mozel l was a pillar of her church and community. She was actively involved in numerous organizations, including the Youth Advisory Council, Fluvanna Partnership for Aging, Community Policy and Management Team, JABA Board of Directors, and the Regional Housing Partnership.

Mozell is survived by her loving family: her brother, Steven Allen Hughes; her daughter, Kimberley Hundley (Vincent) and their children, Ty Garland and Cameron; and her son, Jerome Booker Jr. (significant other Danielle Scott) and his children, Jwhaun Booker and Skylar Grace Booker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Reverend Allen Shannon Hughes and Harriet Lee Hughes, and her siblings Henry Hughes, Doris Hollis, Margie Jones, and Geraldine Chubbs.

Mozell's retirement from elected office marked the end of a remarkable chapter, but her impact on education, public service, and community leadership will be felt for generations to come.

A celebration of Mozell's life and legacy will be held in the Spring of 2026. Details will be announced by the family at a later date.
In honoring Mozell's memory, we remember a woman of strength, grace, and unwavering dedication-a true leader, mentor, and friend.

She was my principal at Walker School she was the only one that calm me down and talk to me like I was one of her kids. She loved everyone that walked on that building. She will be missed. She was missed when she left our school. Love you Ms. Booker rest in paradise where you belong.

Mozell was not only my co-worker at Walker Upper Elementary School but was a true friend.
Her tremendous love for her students and her dynamic personality for caring about all children was significant to her teachers, parents, and community.
I will deeply miss her cute smile and laughter. Even though there is a definite sadness in my heart- I know God will be holding her hand and she will be bringing so much happiness to heaven.
