Joan Maher Obituary

PORT SANILAC- Joan B. Maher, age 86, a resident of Port Sanilac passed away on Monday, February 9, 2026 at the Sanilac Medical Care Facility in Sandusky.

She was born on October 22, 1939 in Romulus, Michigan, a daughter of the late Richard F. and Hazel B. (Ritchie) Maher.

Joan had a Masters Degree in Theology and was a nun with the Mission Sisters of the Holy Spirit in Saginaw for 35 years, retiring in 2002 to move back to Port Sanilac to take care of her brother, Richard. Joan was a longtime member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Port Sanilac and will be remembered for her dedication to her family and her Catholic faith.

She is survived by her brothers and sisters, Kevin (Eleanor) Maher, Richard J. Maher, Nancy (John) Kelke and Kathleen Mason all of Port Sanilac.

Joan was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Maher, her sister-in-law, Lorraine Maher and her brother-in-law, Dale Mason.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at the Ave Maria Parish-St. Marys Catholic Church in Port Sanilac, with visiting at the church from 9-10 A.M. Saturday morning. Fr. Bala Mandanu will officiate. Interment of ashes will immediately follow the mass in Old St. Marys Cemetery in Port Sanilac.

A luncheon will be held in the church hall immediately follow the services at the cemetery.
