Joan Turner Moore (1934 - 2026)
Joan Moore, 91, most recently of
Fort Myers, FL, died on February 5, 2026.
She was born in
Reading, PA in 1934 to Marie Antoinette Clemens Moore and John Turner Moore, Jr. Joan attended grade schools in the
Warrenton, VA area and then Foxcroft School in Middleburg where she excelled at riding. She may as well have been born in the saddle because she lived for everything horses. This love was transferred to her daughters who all rode for a large part of their formative years. While her sons dabbled in horses, they spent much more time with their father, working with the beef and crop operations.
While Joan did attend medical secretary school, her life really centered around her children and the family farm. She had a very successful career as a horse show judge, traveling often to judge shows and teach at riding clinics. She was especially fond of her Quarter Horses and her Quarter Horse/Thoroughbred crosses, and she loved a challenge when it came to training horses. Did she ever meet a horse she could not handle? None of her children remember it if she did!
Joan was also an adventurer, traveling often and widely. She went on safari in Africa for 3 weeks, trekked across New Zealand on horseback and especially loved spending time in her lovely condo in
Jackson, WY (as did her kids!). She was one to forego maps and like to "just see where the road goes!" Sometimes this led to wild adventures, but that was Joan - always up for a new experience.
In her later years, she offered sanctuary to some adorable equines - a miniature horse who turned out to be pregnant, later delivering the cutest, tiniest foal ever, and a huge boy who stood over 18 hands! She adored her "projects" and doted on them. She also loved her dogs and cats, and while she endeavored to train them, we are pretty sure the pets ran the household.
The family would like to extend gratitude to Discovery Commons and Hope Hospice who showed extraordinary kindness and care during her last months. Their amazing patience and attention made Joan's time comfortable, and the family is extremely appreciative.
Joan was preceded in death by her sons Philip and Turner, her daughter Joanie and grandsons Philip and Scott. She is survived by her sister ML, sons Victor (Samantha) and Samuel (Aeky), her daughters Westley, Davida and Mimi (Ted), seven grandsons, one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson.
A memorial will be planned when snow and ice have gone and the ground is no longer frozen, when there will be flowers and trees blooming and green grass all around. The date is yet to be determined.
