Joan Marie Norton Eckert of Westfield, IN, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025, at the age of 90. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a woman whose life was a powerful example of love, resilience, and quiet strength.
Joan was born in Woodside, NY, on September 17, 1935, to the late Thomas Jefferson and Ruth (Devereaux) Greaney, and graduated from Saint Michael Academy in New York City. Joan’s business career spanned banking and market research, as well as the Bakery Drivers Union Local 802, where she served as fund administrator of the medical welfare fund for 27 years. Joan established annuity trust funds for the drivers and grew them to exceed several million dollars in value.
Joan was married to the late Raymond Norton and the late George William Eckert. She is survived by her daughter, Judith Norton; grandchildren, Tiernan (Jensen) Conlin and Zachary (Cody) Wasik; great-granddaughter, Hailey Marie Conlin; and siblings, Patricia Graham and Thomas Greaney, Jr., along with treasured nieces and nephews, Scott, Michael, Jackson, Mason, Caroline, Robert, and Mary Grace Graham, and Chris, Lizabeth, Tommy, and Charlie Greaney.
She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Robert Graham; sister-in-law, Letitia Greaney; and nephew, David Graham.
Simple words cannot convey the impact this woman had on her family and those around her. Joan loved her family without limit or hesitation. Her love of reading, theater, film, creativity, and imagination was instilled in her family. Joan celebrated her daughter and grandchildren every day, and her devotion and adoration for her great-granddaughter knew no bounds. As much as Joan loved her family, they loved her. She was part of their everyday lives, bringing joy, laughter, and outrageous comments. She will be missed.
Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Women's Law Center.
