Joan A. Petro, 86 of Port Reading passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison.
Born in Elizabeth, Joan settled in Port Reading in 1962 and was employed with Supermarkets General (Pathmark), Fortunoff Retail Stores and most recently, George Dapper Company as a school bus aid. She was a devoted communicant of St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church in Port Reading where she volunteered running the kitchen for Sunday Bingo, was a girls physical education teacher with St. Anthony School and enjoyed working with the God's Little Helpers group for 15 years. Joan also was a poll clerk with the Woodbridge Township Board of Elections for many years and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister who will be deeply missed.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Petro and her brother, Joseph Stevens. Surviving are her children, Christine Matelski with her husband Michael E., Judi Thode with her husband John B., Sr. and Frank Petro with his wife Dawn; grandchildren, Michael, Shawn, Amanda, Elizabeth, John B., Jr., Nick and Frank X.; 16 great grandchildren; her sister, Mary Ann Engleman with her husband Joseph as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will begin at 9am on Friday, February 24, 2023 from CHUBENKO FUNERAL HOME, 625 Port Reading Avenue, Port Reading followed by a 9:30am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church in Port Reading. Entombment will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2023 from 4pm to 8pm at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joan may be made to American Heart Association.
