Joan Elaine Porter passed away peacefully on March 18, 2025, surrounded by friends at INOVA Hospital in Fairfax from complications from her decades long battle with cancer. Joan was born on October 8, 1948 in New York, NY to John O. and Bessie Elvira (Thornton) Porter. Following graduation she moved to the Washington, DC area where she spent her last decades working in administrative assistant roles at law firms. She is survived by her brother Carlton Porter of NY and his children, Charlton D. Porter and Tanya Smith and their families, step nieces, Gina and Jewell Porter, and her beloved godson, Nicholas Colangelo and his family.
Joan's life was a tapestry woven with rich experiences, cherished memories, and a profound impact on all those privileged to know her. Friends remember her as a person who could brighten the dullest of days with her infectious smile, quick wit, beautiful singing voice, and genuine compassion, especially for animals. She spent her last years at Sunrise of Fairfax where she was known for her knitting, trivia and Jeopardy skills.
As we reflect on her legacy, we find solace in the joyful moments we shared with her—in the laughter that echoed through gatherings, the heartfelt conversations, and the countless acts of kindness that she extended to her loved ones. There will be a celebration of life for Joan at SGI in Fairfax.
