Joan Colwell Schimony

Joan Colwell Schimony, of Philadelphia, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025, at the age of 91.
Joan was born in Philadelphia to the late John and Bertha Gorham and was one of sixteen children growing up in a small two-bedroom home. She described her childhood as cozy, full of fun with lots of activity: "Somehow, we managed," she would always say.
At the age of 18, Joan married Raymond Colwell and together they had four wonderful children: a son named Michael and three daughters-Joanne, Gail, and Lori Ann, who were raised with love through the strength of Joan and her belief in family. In 1995 she met and fell in love with Matthew Schimony, and they had a 29-year lasting love story.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Matthew Schimony. She deeply missed her son, Michael, who passed away in 2012, but is survived by his wife, Linda Colwell. Joan also leaves behind her daughters: Joanne, married to Thomas H. Spoltore; Gail, married to Steven Schroeder; and Lori, married to Reinhard S. Naussner. She was blessed with seven grandchildren: Christopher Colwell (Amy), Andrea Murray (Nick), Kristine Murray, Ashley Fox (Lenny), David Gonser (Nina), Melanie Gonser, and Danielle Gonser. Joan was also a great grandmother to: Christian, Michael, Cameron, Colin, Shane, Ava, Mia, Mercedes, Aniyah, Makayla, Miliana, Ariana, McKenzie, and Xzander. She is also survived by her sister Mary Lou Schwartzer, her brother Raymond Gorham, and her sister-in-law Carol Musloski.
We will miss you terribly! You will always be in our hearts and live on in our memories.
