Joan Schochet Obituary

Joan Frances Smithberg Schochet (Joanie), 78 of Atlanta, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday the 14th of April 2025.

She was the eldest daughter of the late Betty and Maurice Smithberg of Savannah, loving wife of over 44 years of Robert (Rob) Schochet, mother to Logan, grandmother to Brody, and sister to Fred and Janet. She taught High School Spanish in Grand Rapids, Michigan for two years and finally retired after twenty-five years as a Spanish language teacher at Holy Innocents Episcopal School in Atlanta, GA. Joan was a dedicated teacher who was loved by both her many students and friends. No problem was ever too great for her to solve.

Joan is survived by her husband Robert Schochet of Atlanta, her son Logan Schochet and partner Mandy Moore of Atlanta, Fred and Alice Smithberg of Savannah, Greg and Janet O'Hara of Savannah and nieces, Mallory O'Hara, Teri Smithberg, Annie Smithberg and nephew, Ryan O'Hara.

I was good friends with Joan at USC. She was a kind and compassionate person. We had many talks about what happens after college and we probably got all of it wrong but I will always consider her a good friend. So sorry to see this notice. May your memories be a blessing!

I think my first memory of Joan was at a faculty retreat the day after Hurricane Opal ripped through town. She showed great spirit! I am sorry for your loss, Rob, and Logan, Mandy, and Brody and sending you wishes for strength and the comfort of memories in the days ahead.
