Joan M. (Cashman) Shepherd, of Norwood, formerly of Dedham, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2025, at the age of 89, surrounded by the love of her family in Milford, Massachusetts. Born on December 17, 1935, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Joan lived a life filled with love, laughter, and service to others.
Joan was the daughter of Anna Chute Cashman and John J. Cashman, who instilled in her the values of hard work and compassion. She grew up in a large family, being preceded in death by her cherished sisters: Mary Irene Cashman, Alice George, Ann Grainey, Catherine (Kitty) Diggins, Barbara Silva, and Dorothy Albanese, as well as her brothers: George H. Cashman, John Cashman Jr. and William Cashman. Joan was married to Eugene F. Shepherd Sr. at the tender age of 18, and they shared a beautiful life together until his passing in 1988.
Throughout her life, Joan was known for her unwavering dedication to her family and her community. She found purpose and joy in her work as a Personal Care Assistant at Eastwood Nursing Home and as a private caregiver. Her innate kindness and ability to connect with those around her made her a source of comfort and support for many. She also worked at the Woolworth's lunch counter, where her quick wit and friendly demeanor brought smiles to countless customers.
Joan's greatest joy came from her family. She is survived by her four loving children: Joan Marie Shepherd, Steven F. Shepherd, Eugene F. Shepherd Jr., and Donald F. Shepherd. Her legacy continues through her eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense happiness to her life. Joan cherished every moment spent celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays with her beloved family.
In her free time, Joan enjoyed a variety of hobbies, with a particular passion for sewing and knitting. Her creations were not only a testament to her creativity but also a manifestation of her love for those around her. When she wasn't busy with her projects, she took delight in the laughter and joy of her grandchildren, creating lasting memories that will be cherished for generations to come.
Joan was known for her quick wit and infectious smile, always finding a way to brighten her family's day. Her ability to bring joy and comfort to those around her will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
A visitation will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St, Dedham on Friday, Feb. 21 from 10-11am followed by a funeral service in the funeral home beginning at 11am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment in Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham.
Joan's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended her services and kept her in their thoughts and prayers during her final days. They extend special thanks to the hospital staff who provided exceptional care during the last week of her life.
As we say goodbye to Joan, we remember her for the love she shared, the laughter she brought, and the indelible mark she left on our hearts. Her spirit will live on in the memories of her family and friends, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
