Joan Eileen Shepherd, nee Rupley, was born on October 22, 1932, in Huntington County, Indiana, to George and Blanche (Morford) Rupley. She departed this life on September 26, 2025, at the Timbercrest Healthcare Center in North Manchester, Indiana. Joan lived a remarkable life, characterized by her unwavering devotion to family, her strong work ethic, and her generous spirit.
Joan graduated from Bippus High School in 1950, where she met her future husband, John “Jack” Shepherd. Their friendship began in first grade, blossoming into a deep bond that culminated in their seventy-four-year marriage, which began on March 2, 1951. Together, they shared a life filled with love and the joys of family. Joan was loved, adored, and cherished beyond measure by Jack.
Joan worked for several years at Sealtest Ice Cream, where she showcased her industrious nature before transitioning into the role of a dedicated stay-at-home mother. On the family farm, she embraced the many responsibilities that came her way—milking cows, delivering pigs, and tending to a vibrant garden full of life. Joan's thriftiness and resourcefulness were evident in everything she undertook. She had a remarkable ability to stretch a dollar, ensuring that every facet of family life was managed wisely and efficiently.
A heartfelt animal lover, Joan took special delight in caring for the runts of the group, offering them the extra attention they needed to thrive. Her gentle nature and nurturing spirit were reflected not just in her work but also in her interactions with others, always making sure everyone was well-fed and often sending friends and family home with delightful pies.
Joan's personality shone with qualities of loyalty, humility, and generosity. She was the essence of a supportive wife and mother, advocating fiercely for her loved ones while also holding them accountable. She chose simplicity over extravagance, preferring the richness of life through relationships and the beauty of everyday moments.
