In Loving Memory of Joan Shields

December 15, 1939 – January 24, 2026

Joan Shields was born on December 15, 1939, in Atlanta, Georgia, and passed away on January 24, 2026, in Woodstock, Georgia, at the age of 86. She lived a life rooted in love, family, friendship, and simple joys.

Joan attended school alongside her future husband, Maurie Shields, beginning a love story that would span a lifetime. They were married on July 20, 1957, a date made even more meaningful as it also marked her husband's birthday, and shared 68 years of marriage defined by devotion, respect, and enduring love. Together they built a life grounded in partnership, loyalty, and deep commitment. Their bond was one of constant support and companionship, a love that shaped their lives and family.

Joan was a proud and loving mother to three children: Chip Shields, Angela Turner, and Jacquelyn Blankenship. She found immense joy in being a grandmother to six grandchildren and a great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored deeply.

Joan is survived by her beloved husband, Maurie Shields; her children, Chip Shields and his wife, Robin; Angela Turner and her husband, Mike; and Jacquelyn Blankenship; her six grandchildren; and her seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Jackie Martin, and brother-in-law Herbert Martin; her cherished nephew Clay Martin and his wife, Nancy; and her dear niece Paige Sport, all of whom she loved very much.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Francis Andrews; her father, Robert Andrews; and her brother, Bobby Andrews.

In the late 1970s, Joan and her family moved to Marietta, where she formed many lasting friendships. In 1999, they relocated to Woodstock, Georgia, where Joan and Maurie met wonderful friends in their neighborhood who became an important part of their lives. Joan was especially social and loved gathering with friends, often meeting them at local restaurants. These friendships grew deep over time, becoming much like family to one another.

A devoted dog lover, Joan shared her life with dogs for many years. Her beloved dog, Molly, was a constant companion and brought her great comfort and happiness. Joan also loved being outdoors, appreciating fresh air, sunshine, and the beauty of nature. One of her greatest daily joys was feeding the birds and deer that visited her yard, a simple ritual that reflected her gentle spirit and her deep care for all living things.

Joan will be deeply missed by her family and friends, and especially by her devoted husband of 68 years, whose life was profoundly shaped by their shared love, partnership, and unwavering commitment to one another. She was loved by all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and her kindness, warmth, and loving spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Knowing Joan only for a short time, meeting her at the restaurant where I work, I grew to truly enjoy talking with her when she and Maurie came in. A lovely, kind soul who will be missed. Blessings for peace and comfort to her family.
