Karen V. Shields, 76, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. She was born on July 7, 1949, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, to Frank Shrum and Mildred Couey.

On April 30, 1964, she was united in marriage to Don Shields, who preceded her in death in 2022.

For an impressive 35 years, Karen devoted herself to her role as the custodian at First United Methodist Church, where her dedication made a significant impact. Known for her huge personality, Karen was the welcoming spirit who made everyone feel at home. She had an unwavering commitment to helping others, regardless of their needs, and her life revolved around her family, whom she cherished deeply.

Karen's character was a beautiful blend of sweetness and strength. Always quick to share a smile, her friends and family knew better than to underestimate her spirited nature; she possessed a feisty soul that added to her charm. Beyond her professional life, Karen had passions that enriched her days. She was an enthusiastic participant in garage sales, truly addicted in a delightful manner, and enjoyed exploring flea markets. In the kitchen, she showcased her talents, cooking and baking lovingly for family, neighbors, and anyone who appreciated her home-cooked meals.

Karen particularly enjoyed Court Reality shows and the Game Show Network, often engaging with them as passionately as she did with her hobbies.

Karen's family is honored to carry on her legacy. She is survived by her children, Craig (Melissa) Shields of Chanute, Kansas, and Melissa (Steven) Thomas of Kansas City, Kansas, along with her step-daughter LaDonna Watts of Chanute, Kansas, her brothers-in-law, Radford Shields, John Shields, Larry Shields, and her former son-in-law Kirk Petty, whom she held dear as her own son, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great greatgrandchildren.

Karen joins her parents, her husband Don, her stepfather Morrill McBatney, her stepchildren Tricia Ostrander, Linda Hottenstein, and Kathy Vaughn, and her son-in-law Danny Ostrander in eternal rest.

Memorials are suggested to Cherry Street Youth Center and can be left with or mailed to the funeral home.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 202 South Lincoln, Chanute, Kansas.

If anyone would like to wear Chiefs shirts or gear, please do so, as this was her favorite team, and she watched every game.
