Tommy Joe Morehead, 84, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on February 13, 2026. He was born to John (Jack) and Doris (Leroy) Morehead on July 26, 1941, in Chanute, Kansas.
He was united in marriage to Wilma Marlene Clay on May 10th, 1959, in Humboldt, Kansas; she preceded him in death in 2008. Later, he was united in marriage to Cindy Springer in Chanute, Kansas, and she preceded him in death in 2019.
He lived a life marked by hard work as a Trackman and Foreman with the Santa Fe Railroad. Throughout his life, Tommy embraced various interests that brought joy and fulfillment. He cherished the time spent outdoors, enjoying camping, fishing, and gardening. His love for classic cinema shone through his admiration for John Wayne movies. Besides these hobbies, Tommy was not only a Golden Glove Boxer but also dedicated part of his younger years to coaching boxing, influencing and inspiring many young athletes. Family gatherings held a special place in Tommy's heart; he delighted in creating cherished memories with his loved ones.
Tommy is survived by his son, Randy (Sondra) Morehead of Cherryvale, Kansas, and his daughter, Debbie McCormick, and her partner, Jerry McDown of Savonburg, Kansas. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Mindy Prock, Angela Fontes, Mike Hempen, Cindy Lowry, and Thomas Morehead. Additionally, he is remembered by his great-grandchildren, Bryce Jones, Darci Jones, Chloe Lowry, Kyle Lowry, Philip Fontes III, and Adalyn Fontes, along with one great-great-grandchild, Iris Jones.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John (Jack) and Doris (Leroy) Morehead, his infant daughter Linda Morehead, his two wives, Wilma (Clay) Morehead and Cindy (Springer) Morehead, and his son-in-law, Austin McCormick.
Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Riders of Chanute, Kansas, and can be left with or mailed to Wickham Family Funeral Home, 500 North Forest Avenue, Chanute, Kansas 66720.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 500 North Forest Avenue, in Chanute, Kansas.
A graveside service will take place on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute, Kansas.
Services are under the personal care of Wickham Family Funeral Home, 500 North Forest Avenue, Chanute, Kansas.
