Mrs. Joan C. Shields

Mrs. Joan C. Shields, age 81, Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 30 2026 surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Camden City, and raised in Acto, New Jersey, she was the only daughter of Ava C. Denton and William R. Heckman. She graduated from Edgewood High School, Class of 1962. Joan was a faithful member and served as a Stephen's Ministry leader at Life Community Church in Newark, Delaware. Joan's faith was rooted and grounded in the grace of God through Jesus Christ.

Prior to retirement, Joan was an accomplished home decor representative for Home Interiors and Gifts. She also worked many years as a dental hygiene assistant and enjoyed working with her daughter at Avantea' Resale Boutique.

She lived an active life and enjoyed traveling, skiing, and hiking. She cherished life-long friendships. and cultivated wonderful new ones through out her life's journey.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents and first husband, William E. Butler. She is survived by her loving husband of 24 years, Joseph A, Shields, her two devoted daughters, Deborah, wife of George Leonard and Dawn, wife of Leonard Viggiano, her six prized grandchildren, Michael Leonard, wife of Hayley, Laura Leonard, Jessica Leonard, Valerie Leonard, F. Matthew Viggiano, husband of Paige, Carissa Hume, wife of Daniel and Mark Viggiano, and her four precious great-grandchildren, Zander, Isabella, Serenity, Harper, Madison, and Enzo.

Arrangements have been entrusted into the care of Williams Funeral Home and Burial Services.

Family, friends and neighbors are invited to a memorial visitation beginning at 11:30 am until time of the memorial service 12:30 p.m. to be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026 at Life Community Church (inside Aspira High School), located 750 Otts Chapel Road, Newark, Delaware 19713.
