Joan entered eternal rest at her home surrounded by her loved ones on October 2, 2025.

Joan was born April 17, 1942, on the family farm north of Glen Ullin to Walter and Theresa (Skalsky) Gietzen. She grew up on the farm and went to country school for the first eight years until graduating from Glen Ullin High School. After high school, she worked at the school as a teacher's aide, she then continued her education, fulfilling her dream of becoming a nurse. In 1975, she earned her LPN license, beginning a lifelong career of compassion and care at Marian Manor where she worked for 38 years.

On September 19, 1960, Joan married the love of her life, Gary Weiand, in Glen Ullin. To this union three children were born: Annette, Mikey, and Monica. The young couple spent a short time in North Carolina while Gary served in the Marine's before returning to Glen Ullin, where they made their permanent home.

Joan's life was marked by her generosity and her willingness to serve others. She volunteered with the Glen Ullin Ambulance for many years, always answering the call to help. Her warm and giving spirit extended beyond her career and volunteer work-she was known as a faithful friend, a caring neighbor, and a devoted caregiver to those around her.

She was a master gardener. Her dill pickles, chokecherry jelly, fried chicken and chocolate chip cookies were legendary and often found their way into the hands of family and friends. Joan also enjoyed traveling with friends. She had a legendary sense of humor, and her witty comments will forever live in our hearts.

Joan is survived by her husband, Gary; children, Annette (Ronnie) Rebel, Mikey Weiand, and Monica (Jason) Berg; grandchildren, Brandon (Steph), Barry (Kayla), Naythan (Mikoh), Carly, and Shane; great-grandchildren, Caden, Brianna, Jace, Ayrie, Jossy, Zephyr, and Brayden; siblings, Elaine (Alan) Streitmatter, Mick (Barb) Gietzen, Phyllis (Michael) Mackey, Maxine Schmautz, Mark (Debbie) Gietzen, Kieth (Sherri) Gietzen, and Karen Gietzen; sister in law Debbie Gietzen and brothers-in-law, Ray Diede and Allan (Mary Ann) Weiand.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Theresa; brothers, Darrel (Janice) and Doug; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Adeline Diede, Janice (Steve) Donoghue, and Cora Weiand.

The family would like to thank Ethos hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
