Joanie Barr Obituary
Over the years, her work life reflected her dedication, reliability and heart to service and people, including roles with UPS, the US Postal Service, The Center for Life Enrichment, St. Mary's County Transportation Services, and most recently, Seafarers International Union.
Joanie lived boldly, loved fiercely, laughed often, and faced life with remarkable courage. She always put others before herself and would have given you her last penny. Her light was bright, her heart was big, and her legacy will live on in the stories told, the laughter shared, and the love she gave so freely.
Born on February 6, 1965, in Washington, DC, Joanie was the daughter of the late Leo Xavier Abernethy and Blanche Elizabeth Abernethy. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Catherine Surratt, who was the pride and joy of her life, and her son-in-law, Stanley Surratt. Her siblings include: Leo Abernethy (Poncho), Beth Patton, late Wayne Abernethy, Tom Abernethy, late Blanche Ringley (Little Bah), Don Abernethy (Scooter), late Mike Abernethy, Mary Perry Fox, and Cathy Henderson, along with many extended family members and friends who will forever carry her spirit with them.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joanie's name to Hospice of Charles County.
A Celebration of Life is being planned, and details will be shared soon.

Joanie was a light in the dark sky always had a smile and a joke to make you laugh. We will miss this wonderful lady. May her family know she has a place in so many hearts she will live on in our hearts.
