Joann Patricia Benzing

MARQUETTE - Joann Patricia Benzing, age 83, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, in the loving care of her family and under the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice.

Joann was born on January 15, 1942, in Marquette, a daughter of Joseph and Geri (Holmes) Benzing. She was raised Marquette and graduated from Graveraet High School, Class of 1960. Following graduation, she attended Northern Michigan University, earning her bachelor's degree.

Her love of travel led her to a career as a flight attendant with Flying Tiger Airlines and Seaboard World Airlines, where she embraced the opportunity to see the world. During her time flying with Seaboard World Airlines, they transported U.S. Military Troops to Vietnam. Later, she returned to school to pursue a new path as a corrections officer, retiring from the State of Michigan after years of dedicated service.

Joann lived life with energy and independence. She loved to travel, took part in continuing education and enrichment classes, studied art at the senior center, attended swimming courses at NMU, and enjoyed bike riding. Adventurous by nature, she even earned her motorcycle endorsement. She also loved kayaking, gardening, and spending time outdoors. Joann lived life to the fullest and always "did it her way."

She is survived by her nieces and nephew, Gwen Cleary, Merri (Steven) Burby, Catherine Benzing Peters, Kristine Erickson, and Darren O'Neill; a cousin Sue Daily; along with many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Geri Benzing; her brother, Marvin Benzing; her sister, Marlene Benzing Christensen; her nieces, Debbie O'Neill and Veronica Comerford; and her nephew, Gene O'Neill Jr.

Friends may call at Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, from 10:00 am until the time of services at 11:00 am with Rev. Kevin Taylor officiating. A luncheon will follow in the funeral home reception room. Burial will take place in Park Cemetery.
