JoAnn Ervin, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, peacefully departed this world on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Accura Healthcare of Marshalltown, at the age of 90. In keeping with her humble wishes, no services will be held.
Born on October 12, 1935, in
Newton, Iowa, JoAnn emerged as a beacon of love and resilience, the daughter of George and Agnes (Vodoschodsky) Wonders. Her early years were spent exploring the joys of life in her hometown, where she attended country schools and cultivated the values and bonds that would serve as the foundation of her family.
JoAnn's life was a testament to devotion and nurturing, qualities she dedicated to her beloved husband, Wesley Casady, as they took their first steps together into the adventure of family life in Newton. In the warmth of her home, JoAnn showcased her talents as a homemaker, and as her children blossomed into adulthood, she found joy in serving others through her work as a cook in various restaurants and bars. Her culinary journey culminated at a nursing home, where she embraced the role of head cook until her retirement in 1995, when she embarked on new journeys across Nebraska and Florida, returning to her roots in Baxter.
A true lover of life, JoAnn reveled in the simple pleasures that nature and family offered. Whether it was tending to her flourishing garden, canning seasonal delights, or embarking on adventures to hunt mushrooms, her spirit was a tapestry woven with love and laughter. She found joy in cooking for those she adored, spinning tales shared during bingo games, casting lines while fishing, or quietly observing birds. Even the playful squirrels, affectionately named "Slim" and "Kevin," found a friend in JoAnn, who delighted in nurturing all living things and sharing her famous pickles.
JoAnn leaves behind a legacy that shines brightly through her children: Cliff Casady, Robert Casady, Shaun Casady, and Jill (Bryce) Ervin. Her nurturing spirit lives on in her 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and an extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins. The love she shared with her close friends, including those at the nursing home, will forever be part of the rich tapestry of her life.
She was welcomed into eternal peace by her loving parents, her cherished children William "Fred" Casady and Krissa Vevig, her daughter-in-law Sandy Casady, as well as her brothers Donald and Robert Wonders.
In memory of JoAnn, contributions may be made to the funeral home.
