JoAnn Huffman Scoggin
July 25, 1932 - April 23, 2025
JoAnn Huffman Scoggin, 92, of Greensboro, North Carolina, joined her Lord on April 23, 2025.
Born in Bartow, Florida, JoAnn lived a full and meaningful life grounded in faith, service, and love for her family.
She spent her early years in West Palm Beach and Punta Gorda, Florida, before moving to Union Mills, NC during World War II to attend the Alexander Schools. It was there she met the love of her life, Marvin Gordon Scoggin. After attending Appalachian Teachers College, she and Marvin married in 1952. The couple lived in Chapel Hill while Marvin attended UNC, then moved to Augusta, Georgia, and ultimately settled in Greensboro, North Carolina, where they raised their family.
JoAnn was a passionate advocate for education. She served on the Greensboro school board from 1978 to 1986 and worked for The Education Center, a company that published resources for educators. Her belief in the power of education extended to every part of her life-she inspired her children, grandchildren, and many others to pursue knowledge and live with purpose.
She was a supporter of Round Hill Baptist Church in Union Mills and lived out her Christian faith daily. She was deeply giving-always tuned in to the needs and joys of others. Whether keeping the pantry stocked with chocolate chips for a budding baker or sending a perfect book she found "just because," JoAnn had a remarkable gift for showing love in thoughtful, personal ways.
Known by many simply as "Nana," she built relationships marked by warmth, loyalty, and encouragement. Her car rides were usually set to the soundtrack of Willie's Roadhouse, and her advice and sense of humor were constants in the lives of those who knew her. Her life reflected her deep faith in Jesus and her love for her family and friends.
JoAnn is survived by her sons Marvin Gordon Scoggin Jr. (Peggy), Nathan Ward Scoggin (Donna), and Brian Heath Scoggin (Maureen); 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin Gordon Scoggin; daughter Johanna Roxane Scoggin Woody (Ed); sons William Kevin Scoggin Sr. (Debi) and Harry Lee Scoggin Sr. (Jayne); mother Margaret May Keller Huffman; father Harry Lee Huffman; and sister Virginia Lee Huffman Collier.
Visitation will be held on May 3rd at 10:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at Forbis and Dick Funeral Service, 5926 W Friendly Ave, Greensboro, NC. A graveside service will follow at 4:00 p.m. at Round Hill Baptist Church in Union Mills, North Carolina.
