Joann E. Werling

Joann E. Werling, age 93 of Harrison Township, Michigan, passed away in the late hours of December 22, 2024. She was born on December 31, 1930 in Detroit, MI to the late John A. and Elizabeth (Kaufman) Kramer. For over 46 years, she was the beloved wife of the late Roger E. Werling; the two were wed on January 28, 1956 in Detroit. Mr. Werling preceded his wife in death on August 10, 2002.
Joann was a classic example of somebody who was "born in the wrong era," as she fearlessly broke traditional norms in post-WWII America by continuing her education at the College of Saint Teresa in Minnesota. She worked at Detroit Edison until her first child was born, and re entered the workforce once the youngest was in high school. She volunteered in her children's school at Guardian Angels in Detroit and helped manage the business end of her husband Roger's volunteer efforts. Eventually she worked outside the home to become a proud tax advocate for the IRS, a career she loved dearly. She was always an advocate for advanced learning and strongly encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue higher education.
A devout Catholic and talented musician, Joann used her unique voice to sing beautiful melodies for the church choir throughout her life. She could often be found tending to her stunning flower garden, growing many magnificent pieces. She loved to read and spend dear time with her many cherished family members.
Joann is survived by her children Roger Werling, Ann Harris, Kathy (Steve) Walsh, William (Sharon) Werling, and Jeanne (Dennis) Doyle, as well as her sister Sally Willming. She was the proud grandmother and great-grandmother of many. In addition to her parents and her husband, Joann was preceded in death by her brothers William and Robert Kramer.
Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, Mt. Clemens. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church, Clinton Twp; due to the busy holiday season, services times are currently pending. In memory of Joann, contributions may be addressed to St. Louis Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
