Joanne Marie Capolongo (née Rizzo), age 90, of Staten Island, New York, passed away peacefully at home on May 26,2025.
A native Staten Islander and proud member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Joanne was a dedicated lifelong educator and scholar. She was a graduate of Hunter College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education, and later obtained a Master of Science in Elementary Education from the City University of New York.
Joanne resided in the Dongan Hills area of Staten Island with her beloved husband of 64 years, Richard Anthony Capolongo. She devoted over 35 years of her life as a first-grade teacher, touching the lives of countless students. Her unwavering dedication to education was recognized through numerous Excellence in Teaching awards throughout her distinguished career.
Fluent in five languages, Joanne was also a gifted painter, an avid cook, a passionate gardener, and a devoted New York Yankees fan. Above all, she will be remembered for her nurturing spirit, sharp intellect, and the love she poured into her family and community.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard A. Capolongo Sr., her son, Richard A. Capolongo Jr., and her parents, Santo and Concetta Rizzo. She is survived by her loving son Robert Capolongo and daughter in law Theresa Capolongo, daughter in law Elsi Capolongo and her four cherished grandchildren: Richard, Robert, Michael, and Victoria Capolongo, and her dear brothers Donald Rizzo and Vincent Rizzo.
Visitation will be held at Hanley Funeral Home, 60 New Dorp Lane, Staten Island, NY, on (June 1, 2025) from (4:00 PM to 9:00 PM).
Funeral service will be held on June 2, 2025 at Holy Child Church at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to https://michaelscause.org/ in Joanne's memory.
