JoAnne Kay Garner, a cherished pillar of the Middleville community and a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in
Grand Rapids, MI, on March 5, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on February 11, 1940, in
Hastings, MI, JoAnne's life was marked by her unwavering love for her family, her passion for life, and her dedication to her community.
JoAnne was a proud graduate of Thornapple-Kellogg class of 1957, and she carried the spirit of her alma mater with her throughout her life. She was well-known in the Middleville area for her work, including a successful 15-year tenure selling Avon products, and for her active participation in various local roles. JoAnne's work ethic and community involvement were only matched by her commitment to her family and friends.
A devoted single mother, JoAnne's legacy lives on through her children: Erin (Henri Laime) Fouty, Frank (Sandy) Garner, Narda (Larry) Smith, Abby Taylor, and John (Heather) Garner. Her love extended to her grandchildren: Ryan (Rachel), Kali (Adam), Travis (Keley), David, Rachel (Matt), TJ (Kalia), Amy (Nate), Jessica, Ronnie (Scottie), Chris, Rockwell, Willow, Jake, Sarah (Jon), and Isaiah (Olivia), as well as her 16 great-grandchildren. JoAnne also held a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews, David (Dawn) Irwin, Sandy (Rob) Grasso, and Markus (Janice) Irwin. She was preceded in death by her father, David L. Irwin, her mother, Betty (Clarence) Rosenberg, and her brother, David "Bob" Irwin.
JoAnne's home was a warm and welcoming space, filled with the joys of her interests. She was a consummate homemaker, always found with a book in hand or enjoying her favorite soap operas. JoAnne's greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends, meeting new people, and sharing her love for her cats, Butch and Sundance. Her skilled hands were often busy crocheting beautiful pieces that will be cherished for generations. A lifelong member of the Middleville community, JoAnne relished going out to eat at exciting restaurants and indulged her love of history.
Known affectionately as "Jolo" by many including her grand and great-grandchildren, JoAnne's infectious laughter, humor, and kind spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her memory will be treasured forever, as her life was a testament to the enduring power of love, family, and community.
