Joanne Lukassen Obituary
rest on Friday, November 14, 2025. Her life was a testament to unwavering devotion, resilience,
and love.
Born in the Netherlands, Joanne grew up during the hardships of World War II, witnessing Nazi
soldiers confiscate and burn books from homes in her community. These early experiences
instilled in her a lifelong commitment to truth, learning, and freedom. In 1962, she and her
husband immigrated to the United States, settling in East Grand Rapids, where they raised their
family. Joanne dedicated her career as a librarian to ensuring that young Americans had access
to books in excellent condition, nurturing their ability to learn freely.
Joanne lived her values with courage and conviction. She was known for her delicious meals
prepared with care and love, bringing joy and comfort to her family. A joyful and unselfish giver
of her time, she was a devoted wife, mother, and oma, always placing her family first.
She and her husband later moved to their beloved cottage on Indian Lakes, a home lovingly
built by her husband. Together, they were devoted members of Christ the King Catholic Church,
where they sang in the choir for many years. Joanne's faith was the cornerstone of her life, and
she held steadfast to the hope of eternal unification with her Maker.
Joanne is survived by her husband of 63 years, John; her children Carol and John Sirowatka,
Kevin and Susanne Lukassen, and Kimberly and David Nienhuis; her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren Caitlin and Andy Mark (Mason, Matthew), Brenton and Sany Sirowatka
(Luna, Hugo), Austin and Kelsey Sirowatka, Christian Sirowatka, Jon Lukassen, Anna and Kyle
Colquhon (August), Alex and Mista Caswell (Emmett), Andrew and Morgan Caswell (Adalynn,
Olivia), and Ava Caswell; her sister Sien Nieken; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bert
Lukassen and Joke Hindriks.
Services
Visitation will be held from 4:00–7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2025, at Yntema Funeral
Home, 251 South State Street, Zeeland. A Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. during visitation.
Joanne's funeral mass will be held at 11 am Monday, November 24, 2025, at Christ the King-St Francis de Sales Catholic Parish, 9596 Reed Rd., Howard City. www.yntemafh.com

Dear John I just got word the day after Judys funeral mass. I always remember the great times we had at your house at Indian Lakes. Judy was always quick to offer a place for me to stay during Christmas Masses and Easter. I remember a breakfast she served that was delicious and as I helped pick up dishes she found sausage still on the stove that she forgot. We had a great laugh. Of coarse both of you were loyal choir members. I recall one day she brought me the sheet music Lay Your Hands asking if it could be sung by the choir. It became very special to me after that.
